| Vandebilt Boys, Girls' Tennis Teams Win State Titles April 30, 2008 By Chris Singleton Staff Writer-The Courier HOUMA -- Although there weren’t any brooms present, the Vandebilt Catholic boys and girls’ tennis teams still found a way to sweep through the competition on the final day of the Division II state tournament on Tuesday. Both teams overcame hot conditions and tough competition to win state titles in their respective divisions at the Renaissance Health and Racquet Club. Vandebilt’s boys’ team ran away from the field in impressive fashion, finishing with a tournament high 12 points. The Terriers finished six points ahead of Neville and Alexandria, which were both tied for second-place. As for Vandebilt’s girls’ team, it (11 points) finished in a tie for first-place with Neville, but the Lady Terriers won the tiebreaker because they had more participants in the semifinals. Vandebilt’s boys’ team clinched its first state title since 1998, and the girls’ team claimed its first since 1996. "Every year, for the last 10 or 12 years, we’ve been runner-up or third in the finals," said Vandebilt coach Kevin Ramirez, who has won five state titles in 19 seasons as coach. "I think the key to the program is consistency. We’ve been consistent for 15 years. That’s a lot of hard work from the kids. To win two in the same year, you couldn’t ask for anything better than that." In a competitive boys’ singles championship match, Vandebilt’s Matt Spence knocked off Alexandria’s Jason Goen (7-5, 6-4). After his game-winning shot on match-point, an emotionally-charged Spence, a freshman, celebrated his victory by shouting in delight, which drew instant applause from the Vandebilt fans in attendance. "It just all came out. I couldn’t help it," Spence said. "Everything that I’ve been through and all the hard work, it finally paid off. It’s amazing. There are no words to describe it. It’s an unbelievable feeling." Ramirez said Spence, who defeated Leesville’s Terence Navarro in the semifinals Tuesday morning, won the match because he was able to frustrate Goen by putting the ball in play with hard hits. "He was patient enough to take advantage of his opportunities," Ramirez said. "And then you saw the emotion at the end of the match. In 19 years, I’ve never seen a kid just emotionally erupt like that in a positive manner. It was a great thing." In the boys’ doubles championship match, McKinley’s top-seeded duo of Joey Bacala and Jeff Szolis defeated Neville’s Ben Blanchard and Aaron Rosenberg (6-4, 0-6, 6-4). On the girls’ side, an all-Vandebilt final took place in the doubles when the team of Ruth and Jessica Bourque (the top seed) beat teammates Alexandria Bourgeois and Michelle Lyons (2-6, 7-6 (4), 7-6 (5)). Ramirez said he has watched the two teams battle it out in the last two years during Vandebilt practice sessions. "They’ve all been classics," Ramirez said. "If there was an LSHAA Classic channel, we’d be replaying those matches because they are four excellent athletes, great tennis players and great competitors. In the end, the Bourque sisters won the points when they had too. They are going to do what it takes to win." Ruth Bourque, a senior, said the sisters had an advantage against Bourgeois/Lyons. "We knew what they had to offer," Ruth Bourque said. "We knew what they were going to do. We knew what to expect from them. We just had to do what we do best -- put the ball on the court. We were close to losing a couple of times, but we just were consistent." Jessica Bourque, a freshman, said the victory was sweet redemption over last season’s doubles finals, where the sisters lost a heartbreaker to St. Scholastica. "Winning the championship is awesome," Jessica Bourque said. "We worked so hard, especially after what happened last season. We did everything we could to pull it out this year." In an all-Neville girls’ singles final match, No. 1 Sidney Bruscato defeated Anna Hegyi (6-4, 4-6, 7-5). Now that the season is over, Ramirez had a chance to reflect on both teams’ successes this season, which instantly brought a smile to his face. "It’s been a long year. It’s one of those where it’s rewarding, but when you see the kids’ smile, that’s the biggest reward," Ramirez said. "The trophies are great, and I don’t want to say that it’s not. But to have the kids realize that they won the state championship and to see the joy in their eyes, that’s better than any gold trophy." _____________________________________ Vandebilt Boys Wrap Up Division II State Title April 29, 2008 Brent St. Germain Sports Editor-The Courier HOUMA –The Terriers opened the Division II state tennis tournament in impressive fashion on Monday, scoring 10 points on the first day to capture the state championship. “Wow. It’s been at least 10 years since we won the championship,” Vandebilt coach Kevin Ramirez said. “It’s nice to come out and win it on the first day. Now, we will come out (today) and try to win some individual championships.” The tournament concludes today at Renaissance Health and Racquet Club in Houma. Trailing Vandebilt in the standings were Neville and Alexandria (five points each), McKinley (three), St. Michael, Leesville, Teurlings Catholic and Parkway (two points each) and Morgan City and Franklin Parish (one point each). Heading into today’s final day of competition, the Terriers are still contention to win the singles and doubles competition. Matt Spence advanced to the semifinals with wins over Sam Houston’s Marcus Taylor (6-0, 6-0) and St. Michael’s Steven Davis (6-1, 6-0). Spence was scheduled to face Leesville’s Terence Navarro in the semifinals. The other semifinal match pitted Alexandria’s Jason Goen against Neville’s Trey Altick. Ramirez said Vandebilt had a chance to score more points in the boys’ singles competition, but McCall Walker had a tough draw against top-seeded Charles Blanchard of McKinley. Blanchard advanced with a 2-6, 6-4, 6-1 win. On the doubles side, there is a chance for an all-Vandebilt final, as Nick Caletri/Jacob Richard and Jake Clements/David Romano advanced to the semifinals. Caletri/Richard advanced with wins over St. Michael’s William Arcement/Max Carville (6-3, 3-6, 6-1) and teammates Butch Reeves/Johnathan Rhodes (6-5, 6-3). Caletri/Richard was scheduled to face Neville’s Ben Blanchard/Aaron Rosenberg in the semfinals. Clements/Romano reached the semifinals with wins over Alexandria’s Preston Lortie/Hunter McCullen (withdraw) and Parkway’s Justin Covell/Jay Larrimer (7-6 (4), 6-3). Clements/Romano will face McKinley’s Joey Bascala /Jeff Szolis in the semifinals. “(Winning the state title is) going to be very fulfilling for us because we worked really hard,” Ramirez said. “We stress team and we always do what’s best for the team. Everybody contributed, and it was fulfilling because the hard work paid off.” In the girls’ competition, Vandebilt and Neville are tied for the lead with eight points. Vandebilt had a strong showing in girls’ doubles with three teams reaching the semfinals. Ruth Bourque/Jessica Bourque advanced with wins over Franklin Parish’s Erin Hoffpauir/Lindsey Ward (6-0, 6-0) and St. Michael’s Mary Marioneaux/Kathryn Weger (6-2, 6-0). The Bourque sisters will face Neville’s Elizabeth Meyers/Anna Raymond in the semifinals. Alexandria Bourgeois/Michelle Lyons also reached the semfinals with a pair of impressive wins – 6-1, 6-0 over Teurlings Catholic’s Arianna Angelle/Jeanne Angelle and 6-1, 6-1 over Neville’s Molly Husted/Allie Watson. “With three doubles teams in the semifinals, that led the way for us,” Ramirez said. “That was such a tremendous effort. We expect that from our top two teams. It’s been a staple in our program, and we expect them to win.” Julie Cronan/Lindsay Walker also reached the semfinals with wins over DeRidder’s Savanna Harper/Leslie Leavoy (6-1, 6-0) and Teurlings Catholic (7- 6 (1), 6-1). Bourgeois/Lyons and Cronan/Walker will meet in an all-Vandebilt semifinal. “It was a great win for Julie Cronan and Lindsay Walker,” Ramirez said. “It was a huge point to beat the No. 2 seed from Teurlings Catholic.” Emma Pitre led the Lady Terriers in the singles competition with wins over Sam Houston’s Blair Kelley (6-1, 6-1) and Morgan City’s Desiree’ Thomas (6- 2, 6-1). Pitre will face Neville’s Sidney Bruscato. __________________________________________ Vandebilt Sweeps Regional Titles April 23, 2008 Brent St. Germain Sports Editor-The Courier HOUMA -- The Vandebilt Catholic tennis teams sent out a message to the teams competing in next week’s Division II state tournament. They will be a team to be reckoned with. Vandebilt sent out that message following an impressive performance at the Region 3-II tournament, which concluded Tuesday at Renaissance Health and Racquet Club. The school’s boys’ and girls’ teams ran away from the field to win the regional title. The boys’ team scored 16 points, while the girls finished with 15. "We got a pretty strong team, and our kids played about how we thought they’d play," Vandebilt coach Kevin Ramirez said. Vandebilt finished the regional tournament by sweeping the singles and doubles championships. In singles play, freshmen Matt Spence and Emma Pitre won their respective titles. Spence beat teammate McCall Walker, 6-3, 6-0, for the boys’ title. Pitre claimed the girls’ single crown with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Morgan City’s Devan Scioneaux. Vandebilt’s doubles teams of Nick Caletri and Jacob Richard and Ruth Bourque and Jessica Bourque also claimed titles with wins over teammates in Tuesday’s finals. Caletri and Richard beat Jake Clements and David Romano, 6-0, 6-1, while the Bourque needed three sets to hold off Alexandria Bourgeois and Michelle Lyons, 6-3, 1-6, 6-4. "When you have three of four all Vandebilt finals, there’s a lot to be said for that. That speaks volumes," Ramirez said. "We just felt like we played strong all year. We played a very difficult schedule and it helped us up to this point." Ramirez said he was not surprised that the girls’ doubles finals went three sets. "I’ve said that for two years. I really feel that they’re not No. 1 or No. 2. They’ re 1A and 1B," he said. "I’d be very surprised if both of them don’t make it to at least the semifinals if not better. They are two of the best doubles teams in the state." Vandebilt also fared well in Thursday’s third-place matches, picking up two wins. Laura Blouin reached the state tournament by beating Salmen’s Elizabeth Schreiber, 6-4, 7-6 (3). The doubles team of Julie Cronan and Lindsay Walker advanced with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Salmen’s Amber Hudson and Rachael Thomas. With a large contingent of qualifiers, Ramirez said he believes Vandebilt has a good chance to make a strong showing at the state tournament, and both teams could bring home state titles. The Division II state tournament will be held Monday and Tuesday at Renaissance Health and Racquet Club. "A lot of times it’s a numbers game. The team that brings the most players has the best chance to win more points," he said. "We feel based on that and playing at home, we like that situation." __________________________________________ Vandebilt Dominates Regionals April 22, 2008 Justin Neil Sports Correspondent-The Courier HOUMA -- Vandebilt Catholic dominated the opening day of the Region 3-II tennis tournament Monday at Renaissance Health and Racquet Club. The Lady Terriers scored 13 points, and the boys picked up 14 points on the opening day. The finals were scheduled for earlier today, and it will include all but one Vandebilt participant. Monday’s action ended with a boys’ doubles match when a pair of Vandebilt eighth graders -- Nick Caletri and Jacob Richard -- defeated a pair of Vandebilt seniors -- Butch Reeves and Jonathon Rhodes -- 5-7, 6-2, 6-4. Reeves and Rhodes were seeded first in the tournament. "We played at about our expectation level (Monday)," Vandebilt coach Kevin Ramirez said. "We’ve had a pretty good season. We played well and picked up a lot of points." In the girls’ singles, top-seeded Emma Pitre of Vandebilt defeated Desiree’ Thomas of Morgan City 6-0, 6-0 in the quarterfinal round. Laura Blouin also picked up a win in the second round for the Terriers, defeating Ellender Memorial’s Tanya Smith 6-0, 6-0. Pitre would later win in the semifinals against Elizabeth Schreiber of Salmen. Blouin lost to Morgan City’s Devan Scioneaux. Top-seeded Ruth and Jessica Bourque defeated Natalie Blanco and DaJennea Stevenson of Morgan City (6-0, 6-0) in the quarterfinals. Vandebilt picked up two more quarterfinal victories. Third-seeded Julie Cronan and Lindsay Walker knocked off Ellender’s Arielle Bonvillain and Jernall Fanguy (6-0, 6-0) and second-seeded Michelle Lyons and Alexandria Bourgeois defeated Morgan City’s Janecia Andrews and Kayla Ladner (6-0, 6- 0). "We’re solid one through eight," Ramirez said. "We have an all Vandebilt final in both of the doubles and in the boys’ single. We are playing to where we were seeded, which is good." The Bourque sisters advanced to the finals as the defeated Salmen’s Amber Hudson and Rachel Thomas 6-4, 6-3. Lyons and Bourgeois defeated teammates Cronan and Walker. In the boys’ singles, the Terriers were led by top-seeded freshman Matt Spence. He defeated Pearl River’s Derek Williams in the quarterfinal round (6- 0, 6-0). Second-seeded McCall Walker also picked up a quarterfinal win for the Terriers by defeating Ellender’s Taylor Segura (6-1, 6-2). "(Today) will tell us a lot about our team," Ramirez said. "It is going to show not only how much we want to win the tournament, but dominate it. I think it’ s a very good possibility that we can win all four finals. We know that we will win at least three of them since we have three all Vandebilt finals. Emma Pitre our singles player has a little bit of an injury, but she’s played through it. If the seeds hold true, it’ll be the second time that we win all of the individual awards." Both Spence and Walker would advance to the finals with wins in the quarterfinals. Spence would defeat Jonathan Ramirez of Morgan City and Walker would knock off Salmen’s Corey Bagley. "I’m really pumped up about it," Spence said. "I’ve been playing against tough competition all season and it’s really all coming down to this. It’s really good to be going in as a freshman. This is something that I wanted to accomplish. I couldn’t last year, but I think I can win it this year." The boys’ doubles were no different for the Terriers. Reeves and Rhodes defeated Ellender’s Ryan Holt and Justin Lacoban in the quarterfinals. Caletri and Richard beat Morgan City’s Bobby Nguyen and Chris Robertson, and the team of Jake Clements and David Romano knocked off Evan Mire and Jonathon Tran of Morgan City. Clements and Romano defeated Morgan City’s Jordan Price and Phong Tran in the semifinals 6-1, 6-0. __________________________________ Vandebilt Catholic Tennis Thriving April 19, 2008 Brent St. Germain Sports Editor-The Courier HOUMA – To say that tennis is a popular sport is an understatement at Vandebilt Catholic. In fact, it may be one of the more popular sports on campus. Heading into the 2008 season, Vandebilt coach Kevin Ramirez was faced with a challenge dilemma. How do you open up enough spots for 45 students interested in playing tennis? The answer was simple – field three teams throughout the season. Vandebilt featured a Gold team, consisting of the top players in the school, and a Blue team of the second-tier players. The final team was the junior varsity squad. After compiling a 24-1-2 overall record between the three teams, Ramirez said the three-team experiment has been a success. “What we’ve learned from experience is that the kids need to get on the court and play,” he said. “They need to not only play but play in competitive situations. “I don’t think this is anything different from an experience standpoint. We’ve had in the past kids that have gotten court time, but not necessarily as Vandebilt tennis players. Although it’s good for the varsity program, it’s not a whole lot different than what we’ve done in the past. This gives them more structure and it can be run through the school and the LHSAA.” Senior McCall Walker said playing tennis is the “cool” thing to do at Vandebilt. Walker competes in singles on the Gold team. “It’s pretty popular. It’s the cool thing to do now at school,” he said. “There are a lot of people that now play, and they didn’t play before.” Ramirez said having two teams made scheduling a challenge at times. The Gold team played against some of the state’s top teams in preparation for the upcoming state tournament. During the season, the Gold team faced six defending state champions – St. Paul (boys’ Division I champion), St. Thomas More (boys’ Division II champion), St. Scholastica (girls’ Division II champion), E.D. White Catholic (boys’ Division III champion) and Episcopal School of Acadiana (boys’ and girls’ Division VI champions). The Blue team, meanwhile, face area varsity teams in preparation for the future. With more students participating, the competition is now even harder at practice. “It’s kind of difficult because you have to keep everybody else in line,” said senior Michelle Lyons, who competes in doubles on the Gold team. “A lot more people just means that you have to work twice as hard to earn your spot.” Scheduling for three teams is not the only challenge for Vandebilt. Finding enough courts for practice has been tough at times. Ramirez said the 10 courts at Renaissance Health and Racquet Club quickly fill-up during the team’s practice. “Ten courts is just not enough when you talk about running three teams and the programming we have at the club,” Ramirez said. “The only thing has been a logistics problem and just trying to maximize our court time. It’s been time consuming, but I think it will make the program better in the future.” Ramirez said having three teams could bode well for the future of the Vandebilt tennis program. He estimates more than 60 students may try out for the team next season. “In the past, we’ve been a victim of our own success, meaning kids that may have normally gone out for tennis understand how strong our program is, so they feel like they don’t have a chance,” he said. “I believe having a no cut policy with three teams will help those younger kids come out because they know that they will make the team and they want to play for their school.” With the Region 3-II tennis tournament looming, Ramirez said he believes Vandebilt has a good chance to make a run at the Division II state title. The Region 3-II tournament will be held Monday and Tuesday at Renaissance. “We know that anything can happen when you make the draw when it comes to high school tennis,” he said. Senior Butch Reeves said he believes Vandebilt can make a deep playoff run. Reeves competes in doubles on the Gold team. “I think we have an extremely good chance at state,” he said. “We have great player, but a lot of our competition left going to Division I or III, so we should have a really good chance.” _________________________________________ Vandy Tennis Beats Assumption April 18, 2008 HOUMA – The Vandebilt Catholic Gold tennis team beat Assumption on Thursday at Renaissance Health and Racquet Club.
